So I know that this is a deals blog, and a dead deals blog at that, but I wanted to let you all know that I'm starting a spiritual/inspirational blog. It's called Scripture Cravings, another one of my passions. Enjoy.

I didn't know when to do this, but I have been thinking about this for weeks now. I need to take a blogging hiatus. My husband got laid off from his job a few weeks ago. We're doing fine with that. We had been looking at other options and even a masters program for him before that, and so it wasn't a huge deal- except we're having a baby in December and insurance wise we were going to wait to do school until after the baby was born, but I'm sure it will all work out. The school we are hoping to get into is in Massachusetts and I knew moving cross country, being pregnant, with a 14 month old would make it more and more difficult to be consistent with this blog. So I think I am saying goodbye. It has been a good experience and I have learned a lot, and I hope you have learned something, and somehow you have been able to save money through reading this. I think my writing has improved throughout this as well, which was one of my weaknesses before. (It still is a weakness, but I feel a little better about my abilities now.) I have loved teaching people about how to save money at the grocery store, and I hope you will all continue to do that, as I know I will for SURE be doing it back in Massachusetts (And they do double coupon days at grocery stores out there all the time!)

Target- free apples and bananas

That sounds like a song- free apples and bananas. Does anyone else hear it? But really you can score some free apples AND bananas at Target this week. How do you ask? You can use this $1/1 lb coupon for the apples and this $0.50/1 lb coupon for the bananas. I hear the apples are priced around $1 per pound and the bananas are about .57- .69 per pound. So I guess those might not be quite free- but really .07 per pound for bananas, that's close enough to free for me. Depending on your specific Target's store policy will depend on how many of the Target coupons you can use in one transaction. And remember you can always print the Target coupons at the kiosks at the front of the store. Go to the Target.com link, scroll to the bottom, click grocery coupons, and then click the ones you want and hit print. Easy breezy and you didn't have to use your printer ink or paper to print them. (Just remember to bring scissors to cut them out.)

Sun-dried tomatoes in the oven

In trying this recipe I have found the oven does work, but a food dehydrator works better if you have one available. Either way they are delicious!

This is perfect to use up those tomatoes in your garden, and you can even cut them more after they are roasted and freeze them to make them last longer. (I'm only baking a few for a recipe I need them in so I'm using my toaster oven instead of heating up my house with our big oven.) If done right, they are amazing, and I really can't stop eating them. Thanks to my grandma for this easy recipe!

OVEN ROASTED TOMATOES

6 medium tomatoes, sliced crosswise 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick
Olive oil
Salt, pepper and sugar (to taste)

Heat oven to 300 degrees F. Line two baking sheets with aluminum foil; generously rub with oil.

Arrange tomato slices in a single layer on prepared baking sheets. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and sugar.

Roast until the tomatoes shrivel, the edges start to turn brown and most of the liquid around the tomatoes has caramelized, about 1 hour.

Roasted tomatoes will keep 4 or 5 days in the refrigerator.

When I started couponing seriously I had a big binder with baseball card sheet protectors to help organize all my coupons. Now that I'm mainly into the file box system I still use that to organize my loose coupons, but my mom also found a mini accordian file that I could bring with me to the store to organize the coupons for the different stores I might go to. I have looked for these since then and haven't been able to find them, but my friend Julie just found them at the Jordan Landing Target dollar spot! I would imagine they would be at other Target dollar spots if she found them there. She said they had 3 different sizes of accordian files with dividers - a bigger letter sized one like the picture, one check sized, and one coupon sized. Organize your little heart out!

Dinner List for August 4-11

Morning Star veggie burgers- surprisingly delicious (we had these yesterday August 4th) with Watermelon- I got the Burger patties at Target and after the Kelloggs rebate the patties ended up costing me .34 a box. Watermelon and green salad for sides.

Tuna Noodle Cobbler- A fun twist on a standard recipe. I don't use the pimentos, but chop up red and yellow peppers and it turns out great. You can add any vegetables to this, and it still turns out great.

Hot Dog Roast up the canyon- and the standard sides watermelon, potato salad, and lemonade

Catalina Chicken- MMMM- I love this recipe! Since I only have bone in chicken, this might be interesting- but I think I'm going to put it in the crock pot, and maybe the meat will fall off the bone. It's a super simple recipe. Chicken Breast- 1 can cranberries (jellied) 8 ounces catalina dressing, pour over chicken in a casserole dish (uncovered) baked 350 for 1 hour. (In my crockpot I'm going to try to cook it on low for several hours) Served with rice- and squash on the side.

Crepes- 3-4 eggs, 2 c milk, 2 c flour, 1/2 tsp vanilla, 3/8 c sugar, 3/8 c oil, pinch of salt- blend it all up and cook on a skillet. Served with peanut butter, syrup, eggs, fruit, and jam.

Sun Dried Tomato Pasta Salad (Using up one of my free Sun dried tomato dressings I got at Smiths this week! And I'm making my own sun dried tomatoes.) Thanks Amber for the recipe to try!

Macaroni and Cheese from The Deceptively Delicious cookbook- it has butternut squash or cauliflower puree in it.

Squash casserole- I haven't decided what recipe to use for next week yet- what are your favorites?

Last year I missed out on snagging one of these and was so sad for some sales that came up and all the free stuff I could have gotten. The coupons don't expire until March 2010- so this is a great deal for some awesome coupons that will for sure be used before then!

Yesterday was a crazy day- and I only had time to put my groceries away- so I didn't take a picture of them. But here is what I got.

Smiths- double coupon event (this ends TONIGHT!)

2 lbs Challenge butter
2- 4 packs Dannon Yogurt
4 Cover Girl Eye Shadow
1 French's mustard
4 cans of Dole pineapple
3 bottles of Ken's dressing
2 packages of Ronzoni Bistro meals
4 lbs of cheese

1 16 oz container of cottage cheese
2 packages of Deli meat

I would have spent $75.36

But after coupons and sales I spent $16.07

That's a savings of 79%!

And then at Albertsons I purchased

8 bottles of Wishbone salad dressing
4 bags of salad (my salad dressing had hanging coupons that if you bought two Wishbone products you could get 1 free bag of salad up to $2- there were still some in an end cap display across from the dairy isle at the Center Street store)
4 Knorr Pasta Sides
4 boxes of Kix cereal
3 boxes of Honey Nut cheerios
2 bottles of Mayonnaise

I would have spent $62.72

and I spent $18.22- but got back a $15 catalina good on my next purchases at Albertsons- which means I really spent $3.22!

And without factoring in my catalina I saved 71%!

Now some of you probably are thinking- how in the world does she make meals out of all this random stuff? That is not a normal grocery shopping list. And it's true. It isn't. But I buy things when they are the cheapest most rock bottom price and as much of it as I can. Then I do the same thing the next week, I just buy different items. So now when I need to make dinner I can go to my pantry and shop there- rather than at the grocery store at full prices. Love it! I might go hit the Albertsons sale again this week, but for right now I need a little shopping rest. :)

I do have to say though the Albertsons on Center Street in Provo was AMAZINGLY stocked, and even the Smiths was! I was happy that the store managers prepared for these sales and really made an effort to keep the major sale items available. I think I'm going to call their corporate offices to let them know how great I think they both did.

$2 Tuesdays at Thanksgiving Point in August!

I have been waiting to post about this! On Tuesdays in August Thanksgiving Point is offering an entrance fee of $2 to the Museum of Ancient Life, the Gardens or Farm Country! Normally their entrance fees are $10 0r more, so this is essentially a savings of 80% or much more!

I do hear sometimes long lines form for their dinosaur museum, so if you're interested in doing that- make sure to show up early before it opens to be one of the first to get in, but the rest of the venues weren't too crowded last year.

Farm country is where I'm going this year, as my 1 year old is just interested in saying Roar to all the animals, but the gardens are beautiful and could be a fun cheap date- especially if you bring a picnic basket and bikes- dinner and a beautiful ride around the gardens- what more could you want?

Children 2 and under are also free! I'm so excited to plan my trip there this year!

I realize I have been missing in action for a few days. We went to Bear Lake on Thursday and got back Saturday night- where I was so tired, I didn't have the energy to update the deals right then. (Also I am 22 weeks pregnant- so my energy levels are not what they usually are.) Anyway, I am back and ready for deal finding action. The Sunday newspaper had tons of coupon inserts in them- 4 if you have the daily herald (2 Smart Source, 1 Red Plum, 1 Proctor and Gambler) and 3 for any other paper (all minus the Red Plum, which you will get in the mail)- There was also a Keebler insert tucked in the Red Plum insert which technically makes another insert- so you could get up to 5 inserts! And there are more double coupons for Albertsons- and Smiths is doubling coupons. WHAT IN THE WORLD??!!? Loving it though! With the information of Albertson's stores being sold in Utah- I was very sad- but if Smiths is starting to double coupons, I'm going to be loving it!

Printing coupons with a different zipcode

As you might have noticed I don't ever post coupons.com coupons that require you to put in a different zipcode. (Unless it's from Rite Aid or Walgreens deals that I didn't catch from Hip2Save) I don't feel it's completely honest to be printing coupons from a different zipcode as the manufacturers put out the coupons for that specific area, and I don't live in that area, so I feel I shouldn't get the coupon. There have been several times that I saw a coupon and wanted to print it off, and realized I had to put in a different zipcode to print it, so I didn't. I figure there are tons of deals and I don't need to be pretending to be from another area just to print off more coupons. It's my personal opinion, but I thought I would let you guys know why I don't post those deals for you.

Home Date night idea!

O.k. I'm a little late with this one, and it is something you probably have done before- but have a game night with that special someone. Sometimes we just can't seem to decide which game to play- so we'll put all the games we have even a slight interest in and write it on a slip of paper and put it in a hat. (Make it an exciting hat, like a sombrero or a pioneer hat or something.) Then we'll choose out which game to play. Sometimes we'll shorten the games so we can get to two or three for the night, or we'll just play one game a few times, or one really long game like monopoly.

Since that isn't an out of the ordinary tip- I'll let you know of an AMAZINGLY fun game we played for the first time during our date last week- and that you probably haven't heard of. I love the game Ticket to Ride, but my husband does not. So I am sad because I only get to play this on very rare occasions. However this new game Thurn and Taxis is similar to Ticket to Ride, but my husband will actually play it! (I'm thinking I need to invest in this!) You have post offices you're trying to build, and you're trying to connect routes, but you aren't locked into a certain route like in Ticket to Ride, and you're aware of who is close to ending the game, which is something my husband likes. I love strategy games, and this one has so many different strategies you always feel like you have so many options. (Maybe TOO many options sometimes :) )

Another GREAT game we have played is called Bohnanza- it's a bean planting card game. Don't mock it before you try it. I got it for my birthday this year from my amazing sister, and after showing it to several of our friends they decided to make the investment in it- it's an addicting one though so be careful.

And another fun one is Metro. In this game you are building railroad tracks and you want to get the most points by creating the longest and most intricate railroad tracks.

I have to say Germans make the best games. Metro is a french game, but most of our favorites- Bohnanza, Settlers of Catan and Carcasone are all German. And I think many of the fun board games out there if they aren't German they were knocked off a German game. Way to go Germans for creating so many awesome board games! Taste of the Valley and Taste of Jordan Landing

The 18th annual Taste of the Valley in Provo will be on July 24th (that's TOMORROW!) from 12-3 PM. It offers area restaurants a chance to showcase their cuisine to the community. There will be 22 restaurants participating this year. Cost for this event is $10 per person or $38 for family of four. Purchase tickets at the Chamber of Commerce office (51 S. University Ave., Suite 215) at the event. I have gone to this event for the last three years, and LOVE IT! Although tickets have kept going up in price every year- $10 is now a little steep for me, but we usually bring ziplock bags and coolers because then it gives us food for a few days. You get a ticket that they punch at every booth you go to, which means you really can't eat all the samples- some of them full size samples from 22 different restaurants- so you can get the food and keep it for later when your not so stuffed. :) I absolutely love it!

I also heard they will have a Taste of Jordan Landing this year for a much better price- and it's a fundraiser for the Utah Food Bank! Win win win all around! At Jordan Landing on July 24th from 2-5 PM you can purchase tickets for the event at $5- or $3 if you bring 3 cans of food. AND children under 10 will be free with purchase of an adult ticket- even better! They will have over 15 vendors participating. The Taste of Jordan Landing will also feature craft demonstrations, games, face painting, live music and giveaways, including a drawing for an acoustic guitar. Jordan Landing is located on the west side of Bangerter Highway between 7000 and 7800 South. Fun and Fun!

Redplum update

Here is what I have found out...

It looks like the Daily Herald WILL continue to offer the Red Plum insert in their newspaper- at least for the next year. It wasn't a matter of the Daily Herald pushing more for the Red Plum, their contract just isn't up with them until next year- while the rest of the Utah papers are up this year. BUT that means people in the Utah county area will NOT be receiving Red Plum inserts in the mail since they can get them in the newspaper. So the only way you can get the Red Plum insert is in the Daily Herald- but that means you can get multiple inserts- happiness!

For the rest of you- check here to see if the Red Plum will be delivered to a mailbox in your area. If not, you can email imwadrequest@supervalu.com to be put on their VIP mailing address and get them delivered to your specific address until they get to your area.

I was also contacted yesterday and told that the grocery guru said if you get the newspaper you will automatically receive TWO Red Plum inserts every week in the mail. I would imagine that means you get at least two or more Sunday papers- and I haven't been able to confirm this- but I thought I would let you guys know what could also be happening for those of you getting mailed your inserts.

I hope that helps clear up some confusion, and I'll update you more as I find out more. Thanks!

I completely forgot to put this up yesterday! Here it is!

Mango Pork Pizza- I made this Tuesday and it was pretty much AMAZING!!! The main recipe was from Amber's Food for Frugal Foodies blog, and then I used a different creamy tomatillo dressing because I didn't have all the ingredients for it from Amber's recipe. I still didn't have the cilantro and it ended up tasting great!

Eating out at Gloria's Little Italy for our half year anniversary with a restaurant.com gift certificate- I LOVED THE FOOD, IT WAS SO GOOD!!!!

Killer Chef Salad- with peas and ham and green peppers and tomatoes and anything else i can think of that will go well in a salad.

Creamy tomato pasta- 1 can of stewed tomatoes (I drain out some of the juice) one half pint whipped cream, basil to taste- heat until boiling then turn off. Cook penne pasta to go with it and serve it all together with parmesan cheese.

Cheap Tuesdays at the Cinemark $$$ Theater!

I love Tuesdays at the dollar theater! The regular prices for the Cinemark in Provo is $1.50 during the week, and $2 on the weekends after 6PM. Still a good deal. But on Tuesdays you can get in for $1! I know that's what the dollar theater price used to be, but still it's a discount from what it is regularly now, which makes me happy. And they have the movie Disney Earth there right now, definitely one I wanted to see in the theater. I have to say I love dollar theaters. I have a hard time paying full price for a movie, or even a matinee in a regular theater, because if I can see it for $4 or $6 less- I can wait a few weeks for it to come out there. Drives me husband a little crazy, but it makes sense in my head. :)

Mondays also have a family special price of .50 a ticket for 3 or more people! And Senior day is Monday as well where you can get in for $1.

I have been hearing lots of information regarding Valassis pulling out Utah newspapers this August. That means Red Plum coupons will no longer come in our newspapers, but they will mail them to households. I have heard they might be staying in the Daily Herald, but I have heard confirmations telling me both they are pulling out and they are staying, so I don't know quite who to believe yet. Question about Grocery Smarts Lists

How come Target isn't one of the stores on your Grocery Smarts website?

Great question! I actually had to ask my boss this question and here is the answer I received.

Many of our grocerysmart store lists are compiled by volunteers every week. Target isn't a store that someone has volunteered to do yet. If you're interested in becoming the Target grocerysmarts list maker for Utah, you can contact me and we can set you up to do that!

The thing I love about the grocerysmarts lists is that I know everytime I go into a store and I matched up the sales and coupons with that list, I can rely on it 100% everytime that the prices and coupons will match. Sometimes on Hip2Save's website or other blogs, they are national and so although they have regular prices, the prices at my store are not the same and I end up not getting half the things on my list for that reason. (That is one of the main reasons Walmart is hard for me to shop at. The prices at two stores even 1 mile from each other are so different- and I can't rely on what information I have been given before I go, so I don't shop there anymore.)

I still haven't been able to track down a croquet set, but I wanted to tell you guys my idea anyway. Set up your croquet set, and then wait until it's dark. (maybe watch the movie wait until it's dark until it really is dark!) Then grab your clubs, the balls and some flashlights for a rousing game of glow in the dark croquet. Doesn't that sound like so much fun?!!? I'm pretty thrilled about it if I can actually get a hold of a croquet set to use for the evening.

Summer Pool deals for the family!

My husband and I were going to go Seven Peaks yesterday after he got off work, and we found this deal. If you bring in one 5 Buck Pizza boxtop you can get up to two passes into the park after 5 PM for $5 each. (The regular half day pass is $12 and that starts at 4 PM- but where this starts at 5 PM after the $5 pizza, and the two passes- it's still MUCH cheaper than the regular half day pass, and you have dinner for the evening, and it only starts 1 hour later, which works better for my husbands work schedule anyway.) You can get as many admissions as you have pizza boxes for the $5 price if you had a bigger family.

Like I said my husband and I WERE going to go, but then we had a friend bail on us, and we wanted to go another time when more people could go with us- so we looked at other even cheaper options. Here's what we found.

The Scera pool in Orem is usually $5 for adults, $4 for kids 4-13 and $1 for kids 1-3. At 6 PM they offer half off on their admission prices- a pretty good deal since they are open until 9PM.

Veterans pool doesn't offer any evening discounts, BUT they do let you in for FREE the last 45 minute so of the day- which is 7:15 M-Th and 5:15 Friday and Saturday.

We got our 5 buck pizza, went to the park right by Veterans Pool, played there and ate our food. (Which by the way- 5 buck pizza is REALLY good! I don't know why I had bad thoughts towards it before, but it was fantastic. You can get so many toppings on your medium pizza and it still costs $5) Then at 7 we went and changed and they let us in at 7:15. It was still hot enough that it wasn't too cold, and 45 minutes is the perfect amount of time in the water for our 1 year old. He had a lot of fun, but probably wouldn't have stayed much longer. We are definitely going to do it again- as we had so much fun- and for free!

Chili's and Applebees- 2 great meals for $20!

Chili's has a new deal going on that lets you get an appetizer, 2 entrees and a dessert for $20! Check here for menu options for this deal! My husband and I rarely get an appetizer or dessert to keep our cost down, but now we could get it for less than the price of what two entrees usually are! Hooray!

Also I went to Applebees with my husband's family last Saturday, and they had a deal where you could get an appetizer and 2 entrees for $20. (No dessert, but still a good deal.) I love Applebees. Their sample platter is to die for! (Which you can get at 1/2 price after 9 PM M-Th, and you can substitute the buffalo wings for honey BBQ wings, much better in my opinion.) Have fun!

Guest Post: Quality vs Money Saved

I am a person who LOVES finding good deals. I’m not as great at it as some, but I come from a family who tries to use what they have and do without unnecessary things. So, finding good deals is in my nature. My mom is the type that finds the cheapest deals on ANYTHING. I used to be all about that to, but when I started living on my own and providing for a family, I found out there was a factor that didn’t bother my mom as much as it did me. That is QUALITY! For example: my mom will often shop at the dollar store. Yes, you can find great deals there, but many things found there, like make-up, is very poor quality. You do not want to run a risk of skin irritation or skin damage using poor make-up! ***Disclaimer: I haven’t researched, nor do I have the scientific evidence and abilities to prove that dollar store make-up is bad for your skin, I'm just saying it doesn't work for me. Toys from the dollar store on the other hand…I do have experience upon experience to prove that they are not durable!***

After getting married, I tried incorporating this quality factor into the way I shopped for anything and everything from apple juice to washers and dryers and even my car and house. I use Consumer Reports and when shopping online I use customer reviews. I find those things very, very helpful. I even now realize that many times getting the best deal combined with quality does not always mean you will get THE CHEAPEST price-and that’s OKAY! People work hard and go through rigorous years of schooling to create the best quality products out there for us consumers. It’s only right that we acknowledge their efforts.

I’m not saying that you have to be loyal to the most expensive brands, but be aware of what you’re spending your dollars on. Is the product something that you’ll use for years to come? Maybe that particular thing is worth spending more money on so that it will last. That type of thing is an investment. For example, when I bought my washer and dryer 3 years ago, I wanted a good quality one that would last me 20-30 years. My mom buys washers and dryers every 5-10 years because she buys the cheapest possible and they don’t last, let alone cleans clothes as well. But anyway, I got a set that took us 18 months to pay off because we did an 18 month-no-interest plan from Best Buy and saved up a certain amount each month during that 18 months to have ready to pay off in the end. It worked out great and I now have a washer and dryer set that is great quality and is still working like new only 3 years later. If I had purchased a set that would only last five years, at this point it would only last two more years and then I’d be forking out another 400-600 bucks just to start that cycle all over again.

My dear sister that just got married has realized something similar about hairdressers. If you want a quality haircut or coloring job, if you do that to your hair, and I do—go to someone who’s been trained and has experience. Your image is something that you see every day and you’re more likely to be happy with quality work than not. I’ve had disasters with haircuts and coloring by trying myself or having a friend do it for free. It is so much more worth it to me to get it done by someone who knows what they’re doing! And by doing that, I’m respecting the hard work they went through to earn that ability.

Don’t get me wrong. I love finding things for free or really low in price, and who doesn’t? It just that I have learned that in finding cheap things I still have to consider quality before committing to buy something. I jump on a deal whenever I can that has both a cheap price and quality. That is one reason I want to be more like Brooke! I’m learning to coupon because of her inspiration and it’s great…though I still have much perfecting to do in that area. These are just thoughts of mine and I know not everyone agrees with me or has my same perspective, but this is how I analyze what is a good deal and what is not. Price alone does not always reflect a good deal. Quality has just as much say as the price in my book!

Thanks Leslie! I agree that quality has to be a factor in what you purchase, especially on the bigger purchases like cars and washing machines. However I'm also a big believer in staying within our budgets. So maybe your budget only gives you the ability to buy a cheaper dishwasher that might not last as long. That's o.k! Maybe by the time you need another one, you'll have saved enough to buy the good quality one, but you had something to get you by for the time when your budget wasn't as big. But it's true, quality can help us spend less overall in the long run, and that's why I also love Consumer Reports because it tells us what the best deal is on a particular product- quality and price factored in as Leslie was stating. Just because something is expensive doesn't mean it's going to last a long time or be a great quality product.
